How To Refinish Kitchen Cabinets In Just 3 Steps

You’re standing in your kitchen, looking at your kitchen cabinets and thinking, why do they look so old and worn down? The reason is that kitchen cabinets are often treated to grease splatters and soot as you cook on the stove. Moreover, the constant opening and closing don’t help either.

Replacing kitchen cabinets can be quite expensive and time-consuming. But if you think that’s your only option, think again. Here are a few steps to refinish your kitchen cabinets, so they look brand new.

Step 1: Clean and label

Before you begin cleaning the kitchen cabinets, label all the doors with numbers, so you know which cabinet door is attached where. Then unscrew the doors at the hinges and leave the hinges attached to the cabinet walls.

After emptying the cabinets and drawers and unscrewing them, clean all surfaces thoroughly. Use a degreasing agent and a sponge, a scrub, or a toothbrush to remove all grime and dirt.

You need to clean the surface very well, so the new finish adheres to the cabinet doors. Rinse off the cleaner and let the cabinets dry.

Step 2: Sand the cabinets

It’s essential to sand the cabinets and drawers to even the surface and make it smooth. You can sand your kitchen cabinets using an electric sander, sandpaper, or a sponge.

Spread cloths over any other surfaces and the floor to protect them from sand and dust particles. It's also advisable to wear protective eyeglasses and gloves to prevent any harm.

You can use a vacuum to clean the sanding dust or use a brush to sweep it away. Before applying the new finish, make sure to thoroughly remove all dust particles from the kitchen cabinets' surfaces.

Step 3: Apply the new finish

Apply the new finish to your cleaned and sanded kitchen cabinets. You can use a fine-bristle brush to apply the paint to the surfaces.

If you’re applying the varnish to both sides of the kitchen cabinets, wait at least 8 hours for one side to dry and then apply the stain on the other side. You can apply up to two coats of paint, so there's no unfinished surface left on the kitchen cabinets,

After the finish has completely dried, use the markings on your doors and drawers to re-attach them to their previous positions.
